The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) organises Beachwatch Big Weekend, a nation-wide beach clean-up and litter survey. MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend takes place once every year, always on the third weekend of September to coincide with the International Coastal Clean (ICC) up - if you want to do just one beach clean and survey in the year, this is the time to do it! (Don’t forget if you are already registered on the Adopt-a-Beach scheme you can make your autumn survey a MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend survey to ensure its inclusion in the MCS Beachwatch Report). If you are a diver please register with Project AWARE, click here to find out about underwater surveys.

The MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend litter survey and clean-up is a national event that has taken place on the third weekend of September every year since 1993.
Thousands of volunteers from around the UK spend just a few hours of the MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend helping to clean up and survey our coastline.
MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend is the flagship event of the Adopt-a-Beach project. Adopt-a-Beach uses exactly the same method of beach cleaning and surveying as Beachwatch Big Weekend, but the events take place seasonally 4 times a year (The majority of Adopt-a-Beach organises carry out their Autumn survey over the MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend).
MCS needs YOUR help to survey and clean as much of the coast as possible during Beachwatch Big Weekend 2009, taking place over the weekend of 19th-20th September. So why not organise a MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend event, get your family, friends and colleagues involved, and make a difference to your local beach!
There are two ways you can get involved - either ‘adopt’ your own beach as a MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend 'Organiser' or help at an organised clean-up and survey event as a 'Volunteer'.
To see what beaches are currently adopted click here. If a beach IS NOT on the list then chances are its available for adoption so you can register as an organiser here
